The Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics of the University of Crete was established in June 2013 by the merger of the Department of Mathematics (founded in 1977) and the Department of Applied Mathematics (founded in 1999). It is simultaneously the oldest and the newest department of the University of Crete and the largest department in the School of Science and Technology.

It is situated at the University campus in Heraklion (Voutes), in a new building and covers all modern educational and research services. It offers two undergraduate programs (Mathematics and Applied Mathematics) and four postgraduate programs (Data Analysis and Machine-Statistical Learning, Mathematics and Education, Applied and Computational Mathematics, Mathematics and its Applications).

It has an interdisciplinary character, and this is apparent in every aspect of education and research. The Department incorporates the strong tradition of the two older departments with main features:

• High quality mathematical education with the teachers being close to their students and in constant contact with them.
• High quality research with international collaborations and recognition and the attraction of research funds.
• Strong international mobility with exchange visits, organization of international conferences and a long tradition in welcoming new Greek and foreign postdoctoral fellows.
